Tips for Micro Tools
- Handle
micro end mills with the utmost care so
not to damage or break the tool.
- Use
only non-contact measurement systems such
as a laser or non-contact tool presetter
when measuring the end mill diameter and
setting tool lengths.
- Cleanliness
and good housekeeping practices are paramount
when assembling micro end mills in tool
holders.
-
Clean tool holder to machine spindle mating
surfaces before inserting a tool holder
in the machine spindle.
- Use
high precision tool holder technology such
as shrink fit. Shrink fit technology offers
excellent rigidity, repeatability, and low
T.I.R. Low T.I.R. is important to maintain
a consistent load on the cutting edges.
-
Rule of thumb for calculating acceptable
T.I.R. in inches is to multiply the end
mill cutting diameter by .002
- With
the end mill in the tool holder measure
the tool holder assembly balance. Balance
should be grade G2.5 or better.
