MULTI-DIAMETER INTERLOCK FOR STEP MILLING
Multi-Diameter interlocking is a new concept in standard milling cutters. The unique ability to mill steps by utilizing standard staggered tooth cutters adds another dimension to the versatility of this cutter design. The seven options for interlocking cutters of different diameters are listed below and are illustrated in Figure 39 and 40. The standard style "S" staggered tooth side mill is interlocked for step milling.

SPECIAL INTERLOCKING CUTTERS
Special interlocking cutters are design variations of general illustrations 1, 2, 3 and 4, two screens back. Variations of the basic interlocking designs are made for specific workpiece and workpiece material requirements.
Most special interlocking variations are for the following special requirements: rake angle for special materials; tooth alignment for size control or chip disposal; number of teeth for tooth engagement, feed rates or chip disposal; flute design for stronger tooth, chip deflection or chip disposal; width range for maximum regrind or to cover additional slot sizes; extended internal hubs for maximum rigidity; or a combination of the above for increased productivity.

SPECIAL STAGGERED TOOTH INTERLOCKING
Special staggered tooth interlocking cutters with outer teeth in line (Figure 3) are mated on a larger inner hub for maximum rigidity. The outer teeth in line design provides excellent size control because the cutting forces are equalized.Deflection on thin walled parts is minimized with this design. Alternate right and left hand teeth cutting with alternate left and right hand helix angles direct the chip to the center of the interlock with this design restricting the depth of cut and feed rates.

STYLE "H" INTERLOCKING CUTTERS
The style "H" interlocking cutter has 10 degree positive radial rake and a 15 degree right hand helix, right hand cut on the right hand cutter, and left hand cut and helix on the left hand cutter, neutralizing the cutting forces. The side teeth are ground with clearance and slight concavity to prevent dragging of the tooth. The fine pitch design is well suited for milling applications where optimum finish, maximum tooth engagement, or higher feed rates are required.
The standard style "H" interlocking cutters cover a range from .468 to 2.125. With the use of spacing collars or shims, infinitely variable widths can be obtained. The large standard style "H" interlocking cutters have a range of .250. Any slot within that range may be cut by changing shims. The inside hubs are designed so that the bearing surface between the two interlocking cutters provides maximum rigidity.
Alternate teeth offset and fine pitch design provides free cutting action and reduces weaving in the cut. Good size control on slots is attained with the style "H" design. The large number of teeth and offset of the style "H" cutter does not permit deep slotting.
